| | | | | with Jessica Estepa | | To begin, we present you with our best attempt at a Hamilton rap on the 8th anniversary of Lin Manuel Miranda performing at the White House: | | How does the FBI's James Comey (and a former U.S. attorney) Lose his job at the top After he's been going nonstop Months into the Russia investigation Welcome, folks, to THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION | | It's Friday, OnPolitics peeps. You know what that means - your weekly roundup (formerly under the For the Record banner) is here. A reminder of what happened this week: the firing of FBI director James Comey, MAYBE TAPES and the confirmation that yes, this whole Russia thing isn't going to go away. | | Get your friends and family to subscribe here and let's get to it. | | Fare thee well, James Comey | | On Tuesday, President Trump abruptly fired FBI director James Comey. How abruptly? Comey was in Los Angeles, speaking to field agents, when he saw the news of his dismissal on TV. He thought it was a joke. He quickly learned it was not. And with that, the fallout began. Democrats quickly called for an independent probe into possible ties between Trump's campaign and Russia, while Hillary Clinton's people weren't pleased. Still, Comey himself wrote , "I have long believed that a president can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I'm not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won't either." Maybe Comey should wonder, though, given that the president apparently decided to fire him regardless of what the Justice Department recommended. So what comes next? The search for a new FBI director , for one. | | But hold on. What are these tapes everyone is talking about? | | That's a good question. The president brought this upon himself, during a Friday morning tweetstorm: "James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Tell us more about whether these tapes exist, Mr. President, because Sean Spicer sure couldn't. Hours after Trump's tweet, the White House press secretary dodged questions about whether the president regularly records his conversations, including those he has in the Oval Office. A couple of the top House Democrats are now asking the White House to release whatever recordings it may have. And who can blame them? We're curious, too. | | And what's going to happen with Russia? | | One major thing to note about Trump's dismissal of Comey: In his letter, he made a point to emphasize that Comey had told him he was not under investigation. But here's the thing: that doesn't mean the Russia investigation goes away . The acting FBI director, Andrew McCabe, confirmed it on Thursday: "Simply put, you cannot not stop the men and women of the FBI from doing the right thing. We don't curtail our activities. We continue to focus on our mission to get the job done.'' His declaration came a few days after former acting attorney general Sally Yates (another member of the Fired by Trump Club) told a Senate committee that she had warned the White House about Michael Flynn, then Trump's national security adviser, and his communications with Russia. Get the popcorn ready, because the show ain't over yet. | | Spicer Saturday | | Just a reminder that Trump spokesman Sean Spicer hid AMONG the bushes after the Comey news broke. And that Melissa McCarthy's coming back to SNL on Saturday. | | Enjoy your weekend, friends. | | | MOST SHARED STORIES FROM USA TODAY | | | | | | | | | | | | | FOLLOW US
