OnPolitics Today: 'It's chaos': Democrats crow as Paul Ryan retires
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announces he

Peace out, Paul Ryan: The Republican House speaker announced Wednesday that he won't run for re-election, retiring from Congress in January after 20 years in Washington.

A flood of questions followed: What's that mean for the party? Who will replace him? And what's it say about the fall's midterm elections? (We looked into it. See below.)

"They're not going to declare defeat, but it's not a good sign," said Rep. Keith Ellison, a Democrat and deputy chair of his party's national committee. "It's chaos."

Also on Wednesday: President Trump tells Russia to "get ready" for a Syria strike, while a new report finds his lawyer's FBI raid had ties to Trump's Access Hollywood tape.

Paul Ryan on running for office: Never again

Ryan said he doesn't think he'll run for office again - "I really don't " - and that his main reason for retiring is to stay home with his three kids. But the timing may also signal that Ryan didn't see himself long for the role of House speaker anyway: "If you're a betting person, you're betting on the Democrats for the House in the fall," Chris Christie, New Jersey's former Republican governor, told ABC News. Rep. Kevin McCarthy is the favorite among Republicans to replace Ryan. But Democrat and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi could retake the role if her party wins big.

"Stay tuned for more retirements as Republicans increasingly realize that their midterm prospects are doomed," said Tyler Law, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Trump's lawyer got raided, and it had to do with that 'Access Hollywood' tape, a report says

As FBI agents raided the home and office of Trump's personal lawyer on Monday, they sought records tied to Trump's infamous Access Hollywood tape that revealed him bragging about sexual assault. That's according to the New York Times , which reported the tape was a point of focus, according to three people with knowledge of the raid. What ties the 2005 tape to Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, is less clear. Cohen did say he paid adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 not to discuss her claims of an affair with Trump.

'Get ready Russia': Trump taunts Moscow over missile strike in Syria

Trump mocked Russia's claim that it would shoot down any U.S. missiles fired toward Syria in response to a reported chemical weapons attack carried out within the country by its own leader, Bashar Assad. "Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Trump said, demonstrating again his seemingly errant use of scare quotes. And despite Trump's tweet clearly emphasizing an airstrike, his White House spokesman claimed "all options are on the table."
