"A black, grainy foul-smelling substance" coated the floor of an operating room at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to a review by the District of Columbia health department last August, a year after an initial report detected sewage leaks in several operating rooms. The 2017 report said the hospital also suffered from at least one "active leak" of sewage. The 2017 report was cited in a lawsuit filed against the hospital by the husband of a woman who died from a post-operative infection after surgery at the hospital. USA TODAY first reported on the hospital's problem with leaking sewage last fall.
