Child tax credit 'is going to make a difference.' Families plan how they'll spend extra cash
Historic news for families this week
Good morning. Today is potentially a big day for families.

Did you know that today is the day families could receive the first child tax credit? We have a column reminding us of that and of why the credit was needed to begin with.

And are you excited about the Olympics? We are too. But we're more excited about having an Olympian write something for us. Here we go.

Child tax credit expansion starts

Families with kids, check your bank accounts. Starting now, the balance should look a little higher.

July 15 is when the vast majority of families across the country will start receiving monthly payments that will continue throughout the rest of this year. The payments are part of the American Rescue Plan, the comprehensive relief package that President Joe Biden signed in March.

Trayvon Martin's mother reflects on his death

Trayvon's spirit compelled me to fight, and I needed the world to fight alongside me. That's what Black Lives Matter did – BLM took to the streets, raised my son's name and demanded justice in his honor. As the whole world marched in hoodies, I felt like I was being held and supported, like my family and I weren't alone.

As I began to regain my footing, I joined with other families and formed the Circle of Mothers, because only we know each other's pain.

How I trained for the Olympics

I started learning karate in my local dojo in Honolulu to connect with and understand Japanese culture. It grounded me in a sport brought to the Hawaiian islands in the late 1800s and practiced for centuries before by our Japanese ancestors.
