What my fellow Republicans should understand about racism
Good morning. You picked a very good day to open this email.

The columns we have today offer up an amazing selection. We have a column from a Republican who offers up some wise words on racism in America. We have an accomplished Olympian on why she has decided to withdraw from the games.

And our list of columns a look at how President Biden is doing fixing what Trump left broken. Welcome to the newsletter. Next time bring a friend

I am a Black Republican

As a Black Republican with decades of experience working with GOP lawmakers, business leaders and scholars, I can attest that racism does make it difficult for some Black people's participation in the Republican Party as well as in American civic and political life in general.

It is also worth noting that class, region and religion make it difficult for some whites to participate in American civic and public life as well – or inside and outside of the GOP – in ways race does for people of color.

Here's what my party should know about racism in America.

Why I am pulling out of the Tokyo Games

I did not make this decision on a whim. It was agonizing. I have trained for five years to get back to this point. I know my chances to swim for my country are coming to an end. But enough is enough. I need to speak up for the next athlete who is deaf-blind or disabled in another way. As Paralympians, we train as hard as our counterparts, the Olympians. We deserve the same quality and safety nets that our able-bodied teammates will receive in just a few days' time.

I have the Olympic rings tattooed on the back of my ribcage. That means something to me.
