Howdy! Rebecca Morin here. It's Wednesday already?

Want this Epstein associate to testify? Here are her demands.

Lawmakers, and many voters, still want answers in the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Now, some are turning to his ex-girlfriend and longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell, who's serving a 20-year sentence on sexual abuse charges, is seeking immunity and an advance look at questions if Congress expects her to publicly testify about the disgraced financier. And she's also open to a pardon.

Who has Maxwell spoken with? Rep. James Comer, R-Kentucky, issued a subpoena for Maxwell's testimony last week. Justice Department officials spoke with Maxwell over the course of two days as the Trump administration seeks to quell public outrage over its review of Epstein-related files. See Maxwell's conditions for a congressional testimony.

Once a socialite, now inmate No. 02879-509: With Maxwell back in the news, who exactly is she? The British socialite's family lost its fortune, and she moved to New York in the 1990s. It was there where she met Epstein – becoming a girlfriend, then just friends, and then working for him. Now, as the Trump administration faces pressure surrounding Epstein's case, she's hoping that connection can grant her freedom.

Why Trump and Epstein fell out: President Donald Trump was a longtime friend of Epstein. But the president said they had a falling out after Epstein "stole" members of Trump's Mar-a-Lago spa staff. One of the workers included Virginia Giuffre, who said in an unsealed deposition for a defamation lawsuit against Maxwell that she was forced as a teenager to have sex with powerful men. What Trump has said about Epstein.

Economy grows, but tariffs skew numbers

Trump's global trade war has again distorted the broadest snapshot of the U.S. economy – this time creating a brighter picture. The economy grew solidly in the second quarter, but forecasters traced the showing to the reversal of a tariff-related import surge that caused output to shrink early this year. Consumer spending and business investment increased modestly, and growth is projected to slow further in the second half of the year as more of Trump's import fees filter into retail prices. Why forecasters expect the economy to slow.

Booker says Democrats need a 'wake-up call'

It's time for a "wake-up call." Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, screamed at his Democratic colleagues on the Senate floor this week that the party is "complicit" with Trump as lawmakers sought to swiftly move a package of bipartisan bills that would increase resources and funding to police departments and officers. Booker objected to the package and offered an amendment that would require the administration to allocate public safety grants without political bias. See what Booker said.

Lawmakers are gathering for a special session to discuss an agenda outlined by Gov. Greg Abbott that seeks to address flood relief in response to the Central Texas floods that killed more than 100 people, congressional redistricting, and THC products.

Democrats in and out of the state are exploring options to block or counter Republicans' controversial redistricting plan. Here is why the issue is so hot.

In 2021, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of helping financier Jeffrey Epstein recruit, groom and abuse minor girls from about 1994 to about 2004, including girls as young as 14 years old. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
