Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Looks like the rain is finally clearing up here in D.C.!

House deliberates Trump's big bill

The self-imposed deadline is inching forward. The House on Wednesday started debating President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and policy package, even as Republican leaders are determining a path to victory with narrow majorities in Congress. Trump has been urging lawmakers to send him the bill, which includes tax reductions and Medicaid cuts, to sign into law by July 4 but has also acknowledged the timeline is flexible. The Senate narrowly passed Trump's sweeping bill on Tuesday with 50 votes, and Vice President JD Vance as the tiebreaker. Now, multiple House Republicans who supported the House version of the bill - including Reps. Andy Harris of Maryland and Ralph Norman of South Carolina - said they oppose the Senate version. Follow the latest updates in the debate.

Not the 51st state

In Canada, there's a swell of pride. That was evident on Tuesday as many Canadians across the Great White North marked Canada Day with parades, festivals, pledges of national unity and uncharacteristic displays of patriotism. Canada Day has taken on new significance this year, given Trump's unwelcome suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state, his threat to slap punitive tariffs on Canadian products and his dismissive attitude toward their leaders, especially former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he repeatedly mocked as "governor." What Canadians said about Trump.

Trump's new feud: NYC's Mamdani

President Donald Trump has ignited a new feud. This time with New York City's Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. Trump on Tuesday threatened to arrest Mamdani if as mayor he follows through on pledges not to assist federal officials enforcing immigration laws. Mamdani later responded to the president's comments, saying in a statement on X that Trump's comments "don't just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation." What Trump's clash with Mamdani means.
