@KathrynPlmr

Hello readers, and welcome to Tuesday's On Politics. I'm politics reporter Kathryn Palmer, rounding up today's top stories on all things political. Here's what we're following today.

Trump appears in new Epstein files drop

The Epstein files didn't all publish on Friday, Dec. 19 (even though that was the legal deadline), and today we're getting a new dump of documents from the Justice Department. The latest release includes dozens of video clips and 29,000 pages of documents, with many redactions. As with the previous releases, it's a dizzying tranche of material to sort through, and the DOJ is once again fielding complaints from lawmakers and others that the legally mandated search function to browse the files is inefficient. Among the top discoveries so far: There are new photos, some showing Trump and Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend; Trump is accused of rape in a report the DOJ calls "unfounded and false"; a federal prosecutor wrote in an email that Trump had flown on Epstein's jet "many more times" than was previously reported; and a potential witness intimidation incident emerged in a Florida investigation in 2006 involving Epstein.

Follow along as USA TODAY reporters comb through the files and provide live updates on the latest.

Poll: Americans unhappy with economy, US leadership

It's supposed to be a merry time of the year, but a new national poll finds Americans are wrapping up 2025 with a bad taste in their mouths over the state of the country. A new two-week poll from Gallup shows that a majority of Americans are unhappy about congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle, dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country and do not approve of the country's top leaders in the White House, Supreme Court and the Federal Reserve. That low opinion extends to the president as well, who has a 36% approval rating in the survey. Read the full breakdown of the December poll here.

Ohio lawmaker sues Trump over Kennedy Center rebrand

Trump's penchant for naming things after himself has attracted plenty of negative attention before. Now, his latest renaming effort is also earning him a lawsuit. An Ohio lawmaker is suing the president and his administration, saying they violated the law by renaming the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Earlier this week, members of the Kennedy Center board, of which Ohio Congresswoman Joyce Beatty is a member, voted to rename the center and tack on Trump's name to the front, making it the "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Center" for short. Beatty is asking a federal court to step in and rule that renaming the center as the board did violates the Constitution, and wants a judge to order Trump's name be removed.
