Hello readers and welcome to a special Saturday edition of On Politics following the U.S. and Israel's military strikes on Iran. I'm Sarah D. Wire and this is what we know about what's happening in the Middle East. |
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the joint strikes, an Israeli source confirmed to USA TODAY. Trump called for Iranians to overthrow their government. |
The White House had ramped up the pressure on Iran for a new nuclear deal for months, with negotiations seeming to reach an impasse late last week. |
Trump and military and congressional leaders have all indicated the new offensive will take time. In recent weeks, we've watched the largest build-up of American military power in the Middle East since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. |
But Democrats, and some Republicans, in Congress are demanding more information from Trump about why he had to act now and without asking Congress. They want full classified briefings this week, and plan to force a vote on a War Powers Resolution to limit how long the U.S. is involved and whether troops can be engaged. |
