Hello readers and welcome back. Kathryn Palmer here. Hope you all had a restful weekend, because we're in for another busy week: the war in Iran is ongoing, and tomorrow voters in Georgia and Mississippi head to the ballot box. Here's what to know today. |
Seventh US soldier to die in Iran war identified |
The Pentagon identified the seventh soldier killed in the Iran war as Army Sgt. Benjamin Pennington, 26. Pennington, of Glendale, Kentucky, died on March 8 from injuries he sustained in an Iranian counter-attack a week prior on the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. He was assigned to the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, Fort Carson, Colorado, the Pentagon said. He sustained serious injuries in an Iranian attack on the base in Saudi Arabia on March 1. The six other American troops were killed in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait. News of the latest American casualty comes as the U.S.-Israel war on Iran enters its 10th day, amid soaring oil prices and news that the country has chosen its next supreme leader. | Members of the military carry a transfer case during a dignified transfer of the remains of six U.S. Army service members of the 103rd Sustainment Command, who were killed in Kuwait amid the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, on March 7, 2026. Trump: rising oil costs a 'small price to pay' | As the U.S.-Israel war with Iran rattles global energy markets, Trump said that rising oil prices are a "small price to pay," and suggested that people concerned about them are "fools." In a post on social media yesterday, the president criticized the mounting concerns and cast the price hikes as temporary, promising they would drop once "the destruction of the Iran nuclear threat is over." Any people who think differently, he wrote, are "fools." Oil prices today jumped above $110 a barrel − a high not matched since 2022. Trump's post is the latest attempt from the administration to downplay the widening economic reverberations of the open-ended war against Iran. |
Exclusive: Trump eyes surprise economic deal with Cuba | The Trump administration is preparing an economic deal with Cuba that could be announced soon, two sources with knowledge about the administration's plans told USA TODAY. The details of the prospective deal and exact timing are unknown, but an agreement could include a relaxation on Americans' ability to travel to Havana. Discussions have included an off-ramp for President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Castro family remaining on the island and deals on ports, energy and tourism. USA TODAY has also learned the U.S. government has floated dropping some sanctions against the Caribbean nation. After the dramatic U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in early January, and the abrupt cutoff of oil shipments, the island could be the administration's next target for regime change, as Trump has repeatedly suggested. | | Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt did not address concerns of a military draft while speaking on FOX News.
