Exclusive: Young Castro wants Trump to deal, he says in first US interview

Raul Castro's right-hand man says he’s ready to lead Cuba and negotiate its future with U.S. President Donald Trump, in exclusive USA Today interview.

In his first interview with a U.S. news outlet, Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro — the favorite grandson and right-hand man of Cuban leader Raúl Castro — says he's ready to step up if Cuba's revolution needs him. He holds no government office. Yet he's emerged as a key figure in conversations about Cuba's future as the island faces an economic crisis, blackouts and growing pressure from Washington.

“I’ve never been interested in politics. It’s never been a calling of mine,” Rodríguez Castro told USA TODAY in interviews during two days in June in Havana. “But if at some point the revolution needs me to step up, I will do it.”
