When it comes to self-driving technology, Pandora's box has already been opened. Whether we like it or not, some of the largest cities (with the densest populations) in the country already have autonomous robotaxis shuttling riders to destinations.

Waymo, Zoox and Tesla are all operating autonomous robotaxi services that feature self-driving cars without human drivers. Waymo vehicles are already responsible for millions of paid trips despite operating a commercial fleet of under 4,000 models in 2026.

Some of the many major metropolitan areas where robotaxi rideshare services are currently active include the San Francisco Bay area, Miami and Orlando, Los Angeles and Austin. This week we published a story on Tesla mapping out areas just outside of New York City in Cybercabs operated by drivers.

I tested Zoox's robotaxi service in Las Vegas and found the experience to be surprisingly comfortable and convenient. Their robotaxi has a very specific design that features massive glass carriage-like doors, and it felt safe through the duration of my ride.
