How do you define reliability when car shopping? |
One of our most popular stories of the week was a ranking list of the most dependable new SUVs you can buy this year. Does reliability mean different things to different drivers? More importantly, is it a key factor to consider when shopping for a new car?

As an expert car reviewer who loves cars, but also cares about value, longevity means a lot to me. A vehicle's true value shines years into long ownership periods, since new cars tend to depreciate drastically in their first few years on the road.

I define reliability as the ability to reach 200,000 miles and beyond while maintaining a low cost of ownership. This means no glaring mechanical component issues that result in expensive mechanic shop visits.

To gauge a vehicle's reliability, I analyze data from automotive research sites like iSeeCars.com and CarComplaints.com. If longevity is the clearest indicator of dependability, then SUVs like the Toyota Sequoia, 4Runner, Lexus GX, Honda HR-V, and Honda CR-V stand out among their competitors.
