@zachschermele

Hello, readers. Welcome back to On Politics. Zach Schermele here, USA TODAY's congressional correspondent. It's Monday, and a DC judge is furious at the Trump administration over a golf course. More on that later.

DHS agents search Ilhan Omar's home

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's home this morning, according to the congresswoman's office , and it has congressional Democrats rattled. Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted the early-morning raid at her DC-area residence. In a joint statement, House Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, called the development "deeply disturbing."

"For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations," they said. "Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family."

The purpose for the search wasn't immediately clear, but top Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, have long accused the Minnesota lawmaker, who was born in Somalia and immigrated to the United States as a child refugee, of immigration fraud, which she denies.

Omar characterized the search as "just the latest in (Trump's) campaign of political intimidation." "I’m ok," she wrote on social media . "Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement."

Judge 'furious' over golf course tree removals

A federal judge said today she was "furious" that the Trump administration cut down nearly 500 trees at a public golf course in DC, despite ongoing litigation aimed at preventing the destruction.

What happened: Over the weekend, National Park Service workers cut down 430 trees at East Potomac Golf Links, as my colleague Bart Jansen reports . The government alerted litigants, who were trying to prevent the tree removal, about the plans on Friday at 4:55 p.m. before the heavy equipment began operating the next morning.

"More than being upset and furious right now, I am just deeply disappointed in the government," U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes told government lawyers during an emergency hearing today. "On what universe did anyone in your office think this was acceptable?"

Johnson won't watch Fort Hood shooter's execution livestream

House Speaker Mike Johnson says he won't watch a livestream of the Pentagon's firing-squad execution of the Fort Hood shooter, becoming the latest high-ranking Republican to express apparent unease. "There are colleagues that have concerns," the Louisiana Republican told CBS News. "The concern would be that you would create a video that would be a recruiting tool for future terrorists. You know, we've got to think through the policy of implications of all that." Read more from my colleague Erin Mansfield here.

Days after President Donald Trump struck a diesel deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his top general at NATO warned Moscow against attacking Europe.

Sen. Thom Tillis says Russian diesel deal may not be legal

The outgoing Republican senator from North Carolina suggested the Russian diesel deal between Trump and Putin could run afoul of U.S. law.
