Much like you've always suspected you weren't your parents' favorite child, Bernie long suspected that DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was showing favoritism toward Hillary. But unlike you, Sanders now has confirmation; apparently WikiLeaks doesn't care about you or your family dynamic. And the leak couldn't have happened at a worse time for the Dems as they get started with their 2016 convention in Philadelphia, especially following a week of disunity on display at the Republican National Convention. |
Two ways to sabotage the outsider |
The Republicans and Democrats did some A/B testing over the past few months on how to get rid of their non-Establishment upstart candidates: |
Democratic National Committee: Win the backing of party leadership, starting at the very top. Republican National Committee:Make fun of tiny hands; hope for the best. |
Turns out the Democratic way worked much better! On Saturday, Julian Assange's WikiLeaks released more than 19,000 emails from top DNC officials sent during the primary campaign, and they have a decidedly anti-Bernie slant. Among them, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz calls Sanders a "damn liar" and "scummy," while DNC CFO Brad Marshall suggests Sanders be asked about his faith, believing a) he's an atheist, and b) his atheism won't play well in the South. The leaked emails would be awkward enough if they were simply Team Clinton's internal emails, but the DNC theoretically should be focused on defeating the Republicans, not choosing favorites in the primaries. The fallout was swift on Sunday, but it may not be over yet. By mid-afternoon, it was announced that Wasserman Schultz wouldn't speak at the convention; just a few hours later, she announced she would step down as DNC chair once the convention was over. |
Stay tuned; it's only Monday! Here's what to watch for today. |
Convention goal: Make America hate Hillary less |
We're way past trying to figure out which candidate is most likable. Now we're just figuring out which candidate makes us want to tap our brakes if we saw them in a crosswalk. "People want to know that the next four years is not going to be a dumpster fire," said Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia politics expert. Low bar: set. |
Clinton's plan this week is to tell her life story and to establish her credentials as a trustworthy candidate (which was already an uphill battle , but something that probably seemed at least slightly easier on Friday). The lowest-hanging fruit for Hillary might be the one in five voters under 29 who are still undecided, according to a new Harvard Institute of Politics poll. DNC interns probably are loading up more awkward Pokemon Go jokes to the teleprompters right this minute. |
Sanders gets opportunity to go full Cruz |
The opening remarks for this week's convention go to Bernie Sanders , who once vowed to take the delegate fight all the way to Philadelphia. Will he pull a Ted Cruz and skip out on a Clinton endorsement? Not likely. "We have to elect Secretary Clinton, who on every single issue - fighting for the middle class, on health care, on climate change - is a far, far superior candidate to Trump," Sanders said on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday. "That's where I think the focus has got to be." |
Trump is making a play for Sanders' supporters, as is Jill Stein, based on the leaked email controversy. Sanders, though, seems to be on Team Clinton - if only because he's so anti-Trump. He spent Thursday evening live-tweeting Donald's speech , in case any of his supporters were starting to be wooed by Trump's anti-establishment, anti-trade pact talk. |

This tweet was pretty funny last week, but it's even funnier now. |
