Roy Moore rides a horse to vote, Dec. 12, 2017, Gallant,

In the next few hours, Alabama will have a new senator.

We don't know yet whether that person will be Republican Roy Moore or Democrat Doug Jones. But the USA TODAY politics team will have updates as the night forges on.

Subscribe here and let's get to it.

I know that we can win

When Roy Moore won Alabama's Republican primary back in September, he seemed like a shoe-in for the Senate, despite his controversial background. And then November happened.

Moore now faces multiple accusations of sexual abuse, harassment and assault, from women who were in their teens at the times of the incidents. And he still may be elected to the Senate over Democrat Doug Jones to take the seat once occupied by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. It is likely to be a close race.

We've talked about how it's kind of a big deal that Jones made this much headway in a state that hasn't had a Democratic senator in 20 years (looking at you, formerly Democratic Sen. Richard Shelby). And we've talked about the fact that, regardless of what happens, this race has implications for the 2018 midterms.

So, now we and Henrietta Boggs-MacGuire will wait.

Gillibrand and Dems v. Trump

President Trump kicked off his Monday morning with an attack on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

"Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office 'begging' for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!" he wrote.

Gillibrand called the tweet "sexist smear." The White House says it isn't "sexist at all."

Still, the attack comes as Democrats have started to call for congressional hearings into the president's own past of alleged sexual misconduct.

So, maybe not the best move, Mr. President.
