The eye of Hurricane Florence makes landfall near Wilmington on the North Carolina coast

  Florence, which has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, is projected to bring "hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge," as it crashes ashore, the National Weather Service said. "Catastrophic" freshwater flooding is expected over portions of North and South Carolina.
