Hey there OnPolitics readers! Questions about age and acuity have surrounded the 2024 presidential race. Donald Trump, 77, and Joe Biden, 81, are expected to face off in a 2020 rematch, and both men would hold the distinction of being the oldest person to take the oath of office if sworn in next January. |
But neither candidate should be too worried, according to a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll that found 59.6% of survey respondents are very or somewhat comfortable with someone in their eighties serving as president of the United States, your OnPolitics author reported. |
❓ What about other occupations? A majority of respondents said they are not very or not at all comfortable with a professional in their eighties performing other occupations, like performing surgery (62.3%) , piloting a flight (60.2%) or driving a school bus (55%). |
🔴 Why the discrepancy? Many people see the work of a surgeon or a school bus driver up close, and they immediately can judge whether or not they feel safe in some circumstances. Performing surgery and driving a school bus also require responding quickly, whereas a president can take time to reflect on decisions. | | | | Donald Trump's lawyers said he needs nearly $1 billion to get a bond in his civil fraud case and maintain his business — a "practical impossibility." | | | | On March 31 of 1968, Lyndon Johnson announced he was withdrawing from that year's presidential race - and changed American politics forever. | | | | Couy Griffin, a former rodeo rider, was the first person who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack to be removed from office using the 14th Amendment. | | | | Jason Riley spoke out against politicians using his daughter's death and name in the debate over immigration and border security. | | | | Although health care has not come up much as a campaign issue for the presumptive candidates, people still consider it a major public problem. | | | | | This 7-day newsletter course will help you be an informed voter before Nov. 5. | | | | | | | |
