The government shutdown enters a new week |
Lawmakers continue to play the blame game over the government shutdown and there appears to be little, if any, progress toward reopening the doors. The House is out of session this week. The Senate, however, is expected to vote on a pair of bills to reopen the government on Monday, though both measures are likely to fail absent a compromise. Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority, but 60 votes are needed to advance legislation. You can catch up on our live coverage here. |

Trump warned that Hamas would face "complete obliteration" if the Palestinian militant group insists on remaining in power in Gaza, as negotiations to end the devastating war between Israel and Hamas are set for this week. Hamas said on Oct. 3 it had agreed to release all Israeli hostages, alive or dead, under the terms of Trump's 20-point Gaza peace plan and is expected to enter mediated negotiations to discuss the details in Egypt. But missing from Hamas' response was a commitment to have no role in Gaza's governance. |

Trump and the National Guard |
A federal judge on Oct. 5 temporarily blocked the Trump administration from sending any National Guard troops to police Portland, Oregon , hours after the Pentagon said it reassigned 200 California National Guard members to Oregon. The ruling by Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut in Oregon came after the Trump administration decided to call in troops from California and Texas. A day before that, the judge temporarily blocked Trump from deploying 200 Oregon National Guard troops to Portland.
